Figure heads in HPSG
نویسنده
چکیده
Figure heads are words without autonomous content, such as the copula and the infinitival to. They pose a challenge for the head-driven semantics of HPSG-94, since the latter requires the CONTENTjNUCLEUS value of a head-complement combination to be identical to the one of its head daughter. As a consequence, if the head is semantically vacuous, the combination is —erroneously— predicted to be vacuous as well. In order to repair this, HPSG-94 stipulates that the CONTENT value of a vacuous word is identified with the one of its complement. Technically, this gives the right result, but it leaves a number of issues unresolved. First, if the copula is vacuous, then what happens to the semantic contribution of its tense? Second, what are the criteria for identifying vacuous words? Third, are there any alternatives for the figure head treatment, and if so, what is the kind of evidence that can be used to motivate a choice? In dealing with these questions, I will integrate a DRT style treatment of the tenses in the HPSG framework (section 3), I will define a number of criteria for identifying vacuous verbs (section 4) and I will provide some empirical evidence against the figure head treatment, replacing it with an alternative analysis in which vacuous verbs have no CONTENT feature at all (section 5).

An Asymmetric Theory of Peripheral Sharing in HPSG: Conjunction Reduction and Coordination of Unlikes
In this paper, I will address the phenomenon of Conjunction Reduction and suggest a linearisation-based account that differentiates between heads and dependents as to the strength of the identity requirements they observe in constructions displaying peripheral sharing. This distinction will build the foundation of an asymmetric surface-oriented theory of reconstruction that will be able to avoi...
متن کاملHead-Driven Generation with HPSG
As HPSG is head-driven, with clear semantic heads, semantic head-driven generation should be simple. We adapt van Noord's Prolog generator for use with an HPSG grammar in ProFIT. However, quantiiers and context factors are diicult to include in head-driven generation. We must adopt recent theoretical proposals for lexicalized scoping and context. With these revisions, head-driven generation wit...
متن کاملThe syntax of French à and de: an HPSG analysis
We present a descriptive overview of the uses of the French prepositional forms à and de and the properties of the constructions they appear in. The complexity of the data argues against a unitary syntactic and/or semantic treatment, but the empirical facts can nevertheless be organized in a systematic fashion. Concentrating primarily on de, we show that its uses can be grouped into two classes...
متن کاملOff-line Optimization for Earley-style HPSG Processing
A novel approach to HPSG based natural language processing is described that uses an off-line compiler to automatically prime a declarative grammar for generation or parsing, and inputs the primed grammar to an advanced Earley-style processor. This way we provide an elegant solution to the problems with empty heads and efficient bidirectional processing which is illustrated for the special case...
متن کاملParsing Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar
The Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar project (HPSG) is an English language database query system under development at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. Unlike other product-oriented efforts in the natural language understanding field, the HPSG system was designed and implemented by linguists on the basis of recent theoretical developments. But, unlike other implementations of linguistic theorie...
